‘He’s Not Ready Yet’ – Urban Meyer Says Trevor Lawrence Has a Long Way To Go Before Becoming Jaguars’ QB1
Few athletes have generated as much hype as Trevor Lawrence did before and during the 2021 NFL Draft. The Clemson Tigers quarterback was named the unanimous first overall pick months before the draft even came around.
Seen as a generational superstar, the quarterback is expected to be the savior the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise has needed for years. But it seems despite all the hype, Lawrence still has some learning to do before he becomes the Jaguars’ QB1. At least that’s what their new Head Coach Urban Meyer feels.
Trevor Lawrence isn’t ready for QB1 duty yet
Speaking to USASportsToday, Meyer said that Trevor Lawrence isn’t ready to be an NFL QB1 just yet. But then again, there’s no hurry. With training camp yet to come around, the quarterback still has time to get used to his new role.

“He’s not ready yet, but he doesn’t have to be ready yet,” Meyer said. “We got a long training camp coming up. He’s probably advanced maybe a little quicker than we would’ve thought, so which was a positive.”
Meyer is new to the NFL as well. His exploits in the college football circuit landed him the head coaching gig at Jacksonville. Thus it’s understandable as to see why he’s taking his time with Trevor Lawrence.
“One thing that we worked on — when we made a decision that Trevor was going to be our No. 1 pick. We went from the evaluation stage to the preparation stage,” he said.
“That means that I want to see — I can’t remember the exact date, but we started installing the playbook with him well before the draft. So you can see the retention, he’s got a really good work ethic and he’s progressed very well,” he added.
Meyer had been following Trevor Lawrence for long. With his close connections in the college circuit, picking Lawrence was a more informed decision from Meyer’s end than many suspect.
“I knew a lot about Trevor,” Meyer said. “Obviously, I was in the college game for so many years. I’m really close with Dabo Swinney, his former head coach. And really, I’ve seen him up close and live and in-person several times. So I knew a lot about him.”

Lawrence might not be ready yet, and that’s not really a surprise. But if he’s not ready by the Jaguars’ 2021 Week 1 tie against the Houston Texans, then Meyer will have some tough questions to face.
