‘He’s just not that good’: Dutch legend van Basten slams Donny van de Beek amid Man United struggles

Netherlands and AC Milan icon Marco van Basten has, on Monday, taken aim at struggling Manchester United star Donny van de Beek.

VDB’s woes

The name of Dutch midfielder van de Beek of course took centre stage at Old Trafford throughout the 2020/21 season.

Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, however, this was generally for all the wrong reasons.

Chatter, amongst fans and pundits alike, largely centered on van de Beek’s struggles for game-time.

The gifted midfielder made the big-money move to United during the summer, and was expected to quickly establish himself as a regular in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s ranks in the middle of the park.

This, though, proved to be far from the case.

Instead, van de Beek was largely confined to substitute cameos. In fact, across his debut Premier League campaign, the former Ajax man was introduced off the bench on 15 occasions, to go along with a paltry four starts.

‘Betting too high’

Such woes have since carried into the new season, too, with VDB having failed to feature in any of United’s three league outings to date.

As such, it is safe to say that, based on the current evidence, the gifted midfielder’s stint in Manchester has proven a resounding failure.

And, as outlined above, one individual who predicted such struggles long before van de Beek’s Premier League switch was even made official is fellow countryman Marco van Basten.

Dutch legend van Basten has never been shy when it comes to making his feelings regarding van de Beek clear, having just months ago insinuated that the 24-year-old’s early career success only came as a result of the inferior standard of the Eredivisie, compared to Europe’s top leagues.

And now, during an interview with Voetbal Zone, the ex-AC Milan hitman has continued his verbal assault.

Van Basten has insisted that, in fact, van de Beek’s struggles in England have come as a result of him simply being ‘not that good’ a footballer, with his decision to make the move to Old Trafford having been ill-advised at best:

‘It just wasn’t smart choices. If you say you spoke to Real Madrid and then you go to Manchester United, you are betting way too high.’

‘Van de Beek is not that good. As number 10 at Ajax it is much easier than as number 10 in Spain or England. In the Netherlands you get a lot of help, you get opportunities, but that is not the case abroad.’
