‘He starts to lie to me:’ Leeds’ Junior Firpo hits out at former Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman
Current Leeds United defender Junior Firpo has recently hit out at his former Barcelona boss, Ronald Koeman.
Junior Firpo’s Barcelona stint
Firpo would sign for La Blaugrana in August of 2019 for a reported fee of £18m.
At the time, Firpo was an up-and-coming young star Barca likely viewed as the successor to Jordi Alba.
However, it is probably fair to say that Firpo never reached those heights and instead much of his time in Barca was as a bit-part player.
Firpo’s final manager before eventually joining Leeds this past summer was Ronald Koeman.
Firpo on Koeman
Koeman took charge of Barcelona from August of 2020 to October of this year.
Koeman’s spell was less than successful and leaves current manager Xavi Hernandez with a lot to fix.
Now, after leaving Spain, Junior Firpo has spoken out about his time under Koeman. The comments, though, are anything but positive, with the left-back suggesting Koeman would show disrespect to Firpo and his teammates and lie to him about why he was not playing:
“There were things with Koeman that I did not understand, and at certain times there was disrespect for me and my teammates. I ask him why I am not playing, and he starts to lie to me. At that point, why would I keep asking him for reasons; he tells me things that don’t make sense, like that I am training badly, that I contaminate the group!
“Ask who you want – let’s see if any of the staff tells you the same about me. “I do not know what it means that I contaminate the group, I suppose it would refer to my attitude. “I do not know in what way a young boy who has just arrived is going to contaminate a group that has won everything and has been there all their careers. My opinion is not going to change their way of training at all or anything else.”
