Chelsea struggle in midfield

Chelsea have looked light in midfield all season. Heading into deadline day, they boasted first team options of just N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic. In a season that could stretch to 60 games, they needed more.

And so in came Saul Niguez on loan from Atletico Madrid, with many expecting the Spaniard to slot straight in when needed. However, this has proved far from the case. Injury problems to Mateo Kovacic and Kante have thrust him into the limelight, but he has fluffed his lines.

In both of his Premier League starts this season, he has flattered to deceive, and been hooked after 45 minutes, while the dropoff in quality in the middle of the pitch is evident.

However, his brother still backs him to overcome the poor start and succeed on loan in west London.

Niguez a fighter

Speaking in Spanish publication MARCA, Saul’s brother was quick to point out the quality of player already at Thomas Tuchel’s disposal, and backed him to come good.

He claimed:

“He [Saul] is a realist and never thought it would be an easy ride. He’s a new player fighting for a place in a team who are European champions.”

“On top of this, the midfield is high quality and perhaps Chelsea’s strongest part of the team.”

The 27 year old will not be giving up however:

“My brother is not someone who throws in the towel easily. He loves challenges and is also stubborn. When he has something in his head, he fights until he achieves it.

“I can tell everyone at Chelsea that his head and heart are with the club. He has no thoughts of giving up, he’s just waiting to get his chance.”

“I know how desperate he is to play and impress everyone and I also know what he is capable of,”

“But the season is long, Chelsea have a lot of demands and he knows the coach will give him the chance – and when it comes I am sure you’ll see Saul at his best.”

Will he be able to impress over the festive fixtures?
