Hawks arrest JB Marks Municipality, director for R5 million theft and fraud

Hawks arrest JB Marks Municipality, director for R5 million theft and fraudHawks have arrested a North West mayor and a director on charges of theft and fraud to the tune of R5 million.

Mayor of the JB Marks Municipality Kgotso Khumalo and Cyril Henry appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrates Court on Friday.

The police stated that the pair took money from a municipal trust account and deposited it into their personal bank accounts.

They got into trouble after it was discovered that the funds were not declared with the Auditor-General.

Hawks have been on high alert on bringing corrupt officials to book.

This arrest spree led to the arrest of four former state officials who appeared briefly in the Palm Ridge Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday.

They were arrested in connection to fraud and corruption involving a 2007 Gauteng Health Department tender which ballooned from R57 million to R1.2 billion.

Hawks’ North West spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso said the mayor and director had been released on a warning.

“The funds in the trust were misrepresented to appear as if they were being used to pay for services rendered to the municipality and therefore, invoices were allegedly falsified to support that.”
