Gran Turismo movie trailer rips camera angles straight from the PlayStation game

The Gran Turismo movie just got a trailer. During Sony’s CES 2023 presentation, held early Thursday, director Neill Blomkamp took the stage to introduce the big-screen adaptation of the revered PlayStation racing title. The short teaser shows off sleek cars and camera angles straight from the games, as well as the first look at David Harbor’s character, Jack Salter, a retired racing driver, who acts as a mentor to the next generation. In the brief trailer, the Stranger Things actor can be seen supervising players in Gran Turismo – the game being used as a driving simulator.

As previously reported, PlayStation’s next theatrical adventure is based on the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, the British racing driver who launched his career by attending the GT Academy training program. The Gran Turismo preview confirms that Archie Madekwe (Midsommar), will indeed bear the same name, training under Salter to join the big leagues as a professional racing driver. “This movie is made for the movies,” Orlando Bloom says in the promo, while sporting a gray Nissan jacket, indicating that his character Danny Moore is part of the Mardenborough crew.

At the event, director Blomkamp mentioned using the Sony Venice 2 camera’s detachable sensors to emulate the game’s camera angles, noting that it was especially useful for getting shots from the cockpit. He promised three main camera angles in the Gran Turismo movie, including the grill angle, a POV from inside the car, and a third-person angle from the back of the car, where the camera is. mounted on one arm. Seven-week filming for the Gran Turismo film wrapped up late last month, with a stuntman Mauro Calo suitor having innovated “new grounds on how to film racing cars in the process of racing”.

The Gran Turismo franchise is among several other first-party PlayStation games slated for live-action adaptation. A Days Gone movie and God of War series for Amazon Prime Video are in the works, while HBO’s upcoming The Last of Us series will premiere January 16 on Disney+ Hotstar in India. The Gran Turismo movie also stars Darren Barnet (Love Hard), Djimon Hounsou (Shazam!), Geri Halliwell-Horner, member of the Spice Girls, Daniel Puig, Josha Stradowski and Thomas Kretschman (Westworld).

Additionally, onsite, Sony confirmed that Gran Turismo 7, the latest installment in the racing sim franchise, will get support for PS VR2, when it launches on February 22. Those who already own the title on PS4 or PS5 will have access to this new version as a free update.

The Gran Turismo movie is set to hit theaters on August 11.
