Google Chrome rolls out memory and power-saving modes for desktops: all the details

Google Chrome is rolling out the Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes, which were announced last year, to Chrome for desktop computers. The features are now available on Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chromebooks and are enabled by default. Memory and power saving modes improve desktop performance and provide better battery life when using Google’s browser. The Memory Saver mode will automatically free up memory from inactive tabs, while the Energy Saver feature will reduce battery consumption by limiting background activity. Modes, if not needed, can be disabled in Chrome settings.

According to a report from 9To5Google, Google, which first introduced Memory and Power Saver modes in December 2022, is now rolling out the features widely to Chrome 110 for Mac, Windows, Linux, as well as Chromebooks. Features prioritize active tabs and limit background activities to free up memory and reduce power consumption.

According to details shared on Google’s support page, Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes are enabled by default. Users can turn them off by going to Chrome’s settings, in the Performance tab of the sidebar. Google explained that Memory Saver will help users save space and run active tabs smoothly by disabling inactive tabs.

When a user is not actively using a tab, Memory Saver mode puts them into idle mode. The activity status will change as the user scrolls through the tab again. It will display a “Tab Active Again” message once the inactive tab is accessed.

On the other hand, the power saving mode will reduce the power consumption of the device and provide better battery life. It will do this by reducing the image capture rate and other background tasks. It works automatically when the device battery is low and it is unplugged. If the device is plugged into a power source and charging, power saving mode will be disabled. The mode will be displayed on the title bar with a leaf and an electrical signal.
