Good Luck Jerry – directed by Janhvi Kapoor and released on Disney+ Hotstar on Friday – marks filmmaker Siddharth Sen’s foray into film, following his stint in the advertising production industry. As his first feature film, Sen chose to remake the 2018 Tamil film Kolamaavu Kokila, which tells the story of an innocent girl drawn into the criminal underworld of drug trafficking. Thematically, both films identify as black comedies, so the main difference here would be the setting and the technicalities – and the casting, obviously.

The Hindi remake, Good Luck Jerry, is based in Punjab, a state known for its illicit drug trade. In her first collaboration with Disney+ Hotstar, Janhvi Kapoor is reprising the role of Nayanthara (from the original) as the titular leader, Jerry, who struggles to find a job to care for his parents. Circumstances push her to the brink, where she is forced to traffic in “devil’s dandruff”, aka cocaine, to make ends meet – before finally enlisting her family in the business.

In an interview, Sen discussed his directing process – specifically, the acting advice he offered Kapoor: “If you really want to live Jerry, you have to live in this world, be with people who live here. , behave like them, talk like them. The next moment I saw her sitting on the sidewalk reading the script. I thought she was just trying to make me happy because I told her, but from that day on she literally lived there. She slept on set, played cards, learned magic tricks, drove auto rickshaws, played cricket, literally everything.

This was in addition to the dialect Kapoor had, which would see her switch between Bihari and soft Punjabi accents, depending on the situation. Jerry is revealed to be a migrant from the state of Bihar, trying to adapt to the new culture, while struggling with issues at home. Good Luck Jerry also marks producer Aanand L Rai’s second association with Disney+ Hotstar, following the Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan-directed fantasy romance drama Arangi Re.

Good Luck Jerry drops this Friday, July 29 at 12:00 PM IST, exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar.

Following his Filmfare nomination for Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Kapoor makes another OTT appearance with Good Luck Jerry. Jaipreet “Jerry” Sethi is seen as a cheerful, well-behaved girl, whose character worsens when her mother is diagnosed with lung cancer. Taking advantage of her outward appearance, she transforms into a fearless drug dealer, stuffing contraband inside momos and getting involved with gangsters.

“When the going gets tough, [Jerry] is capable of so much more than his personality suggests,” Kapoor said in an interview detailing the family dynamic.

Deepak Dobriyal is ranked second on the list as Shekhar, a close companion and admirer of Jerry. He serves as comic relief for the film – constantly hitting her and later on helping with drug dealing to get money for treatment. His character seems to be hiding in the city, keeping tabs on everyone, and making connections that would help Jerry achieve his goal.

Mita Vashisht – who has yet to be credited – plays Jerry’s mother on Good Luck Jerry, struggling to make ends meet, after her husband dies. After being diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer, the emotional lady is forced to sit on the sidelines, leaving her daughter to do the heavy lifting as she contemplates death.

Sushant Singh plays the antagonist, a mobster looking to expand his drug empire, who crosses paths with Jerry when a priority order is placed.

He is joined by Sahil Mehta, who handles distribution and hiring new salespeople. In the Good Luck Jerry trailer, he can be seen rejecting Jerry from signing up – saying drug dealing is not a woman’s job.

Neeraj Sood has an undisclosed role in Good Luck Jerry.

The official trailer for Good Luck Jerry was uploaded on July 14, highlighting the plot beats and the kind of music we can expect. The trailer shows Jerry working as a masseuse before, long before his mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. There are a few quick shots of her freely carrying drugs and walking past unsuspecting police – ultimately ending with her family getting involved.

As part of the promotions, Disney+ Hotstar also released original behind-the-scenes footage and informative sketches that have nothing to do with the actual film.
