Goal against Leeds shows importance of Mason Mount to Chelsea

Mount continues to grow in stature

Cobham continues to be one of the leading lights of youth development for both Chelsea and England in recent years, but perhaps current Blues midfielder Mason Mount has been the best unit to come off the production line in recent years.

Mount continues to grow in both stature and ability ever since he took his chance at Stamford Bridge under former Chelsea iconic midfielder Frank Lampard, but it always seemed as though the Portsmouth-native was in line for big things after highly-successful loan spells at both SBV Vitesse and Derby County (also under Lampard) before getting his big break at Chelsea.

His first-half strike against Leeds United today (who Chelsea lead 2-1 at the time of writing) was not only important in terms of drawing the Blues level after Raphinha put Leeds ahead from the spot, but it also spoke to just how important Mount has become after a trio of stats spoke to the massive influence he carries on the pitch under Thomas Tuchel.

Despite signings across the last two summers the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Hakim Ziyech, Mount has continued to keep his name among the key figures at Chelsea despite the club’s transfer policy.

Chelsea in the hunt for a bounce-back performance

Currently sitting 2-1 up over Leeds United at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea is in need of a pick-me-up after a pair of frustrating results over the last week.

The 3-2 loss against West Ham was a result that saw them surrender the top spot in the Premier League to a Manchester City side in red hot form with Liverpool also leapfrogging the Blues in the process. On the back of that result, their disappointing last-gasp 3-3 draw against Zenit St.Petersburg in their midweek Champions League fixture saw them lose out to Juventus as Group H winners.

What began as a season that saw the Blues start hot off the blocks and the early favorites to follow up last season’s Champions League win with Premier League honors, the Blues are now in the thick of it on all fronts and must get back into consistent form asap if Thomas Tuchel is to out pace Pep Guardiola and Jürgan Klopp
