“Go Switzerland”: Roger Federer Backs National Football Team as They Reach Last-16 at Euro Cup 2020

Yesterday, the Switzerland football team advanced into the last-16 of the Euro Cup 2020. After hearing the news, an ecstatic Roger Federer uploaded an Instagram post to congratulate and extend support to his national football team.

The Swiss team had beaten Turkey 3-1 in their last Group A match, but they finished third behind Italy and Wales. However, the results from matches in other groups worked to their benefit as they progressed into the last -16 without kicking the ball.

“Go Switzerland,” wrote Federer. A huge football since childhood, the tennis legend wanted to become a soccer player when he was young.

In fact, Federer is a die-hard fan of FC Basel and often visits their stadium. Interestingly, when it comes to his favorite player, the Swiss Maestro is an admirer of the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner, Lionel Messi.

Up next, the Switzerland football team will either play Group B winners Belgium, or the winners of Groups E or F, which would be decided on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Federer heads to the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as he eyes a record-extending 9th title at the All England Club. At the Halle Open last week, Federer lost in the second-round to Canadian, Felix Auger-Aliassime.

At the last Wimbledon Championships in 2019, Federer suffered a heart-breaking defeat to Novak Djokovic. Despite having two match points in the fifth set, Federer failed to capitalize on the opportunity and eventually lost in the fifth set tiebreaker.

Having played just a handful of matches over the last 18 months, Federer’s preparation for going to Wimbledon hasn’t been ideal. However, with his vast experience and elegant game style, it won’t be surprising to witness him lift the trophy in a few weeks’ time.
