Gauteng Health Dept drops comments about HoD suspension
Mkhululi Lukhele, the head of Gauteng Department of Health has been given a suspension on Wednesday because he failed to make sure procurement procedures were implemented in COVID-19 tender allocations, but this doesn’t mean he will be faced with criminal charges.
However, 102 companies are currently facing investigation by the Special Investigating Unit in Gauteng. This is due to the numerous allegations of rampant tender corruption.
More than R2.1 billion was used in securing deals between April and July.
Premier David Makhura has put Lukhele on precautionary suspension, following recommendations of the Special Investigating Unit.
Gauteng provincial spokesperson, Thabo Masebe said:
“As the head of the department, he is expected to have ensured that the proper procurement procedures are followed. By omission or commission, he is responsible because he is the head of department. Ultimately, it is his responsibility.”
Masebe what is left is if Lukhele would face only disciplinary consequences for his lackadaisical attitude towards his duty or if his conduct was as a result of corruption.
