Further business incoming? Arsenal & Aston Villa confirm out-of-the-blue defender deal

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has departed the club on a permanent basis to link up with Aston Villa, it has been confirmed.

The news, altogether out of the blue, was made official a short time ago.

Taking to the club’s social media platforms, Arsenal announced that their long-time stopper has opted to take his talents to Villa Park, on the back of an ‘undisclosed fee’ being agreed between the parties.

‘Calum Chambers has joined Aston Villa in a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee.

‘We wish Calum all the best for the next chapter in his career and thank him for his contribution to Arsenal over the past eight seasons.’

The fee in question, as per the reliable James Benge, will likely amount to a measly £2 million, including add-ons and salary saved.

This comes with Chambers’ contract having been due to expire upon the conclusion of the campaign.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, have too quickly addressed the situation, confirming that Chambers has put pen to paper on a deal with the club through the summer of 2025:

‘Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Calum Chambers from Arsenal.

‘The versatile defender, who can operate at both centre-back and right-back, has agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal.’

Luiz in play?

Could Villa landing Chambers from Arsenal hint at further imminent transfer business between the two clubs, though?

It seems almost too coincidental that news of the defender’s shock Villa Park switch has come just hours after reports began to surface that the transfer team at the Emirates were expressing a keen interest in the signature of Claret and Blue star Douglas Luiz.

After seeing Newcastle-bound Bruno Guimaraes slip through their fingers, the Gunners have been forced to move onto other targets in a bid to reinforce the club’s ranks in the middle of the park.

And Brazilian international Luiz appears to be one such option, as things begin to heat up on the red half of north London ahead of the January transfer window slamming shut early next week.
