Lampard lifts the lid on Chelsea divorce

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has finally come out and lifted the lid surrounding his sacking at Stamford Bridge last season.

The iconic midfielder and club record goalscorer spent over ten years at Chelsea where he rose to become one of the top players in his position not just in England, but in the world. But his success on the same touchline that he once supported from the heart of midfield was hardly comparable to his stellar playing career.

Lampard recently spoke with former England teammate Gary Neville on The Overlap podcast and spoke candidly regarding exactly how it happened on the day where he was dismissed from his managerial role by club chairman Bruce Buck and club director Marina Granovskaia;

“We had beaten Luton Town in the FA Cup fourth round, and it was the next morning – I got a text from [chairman] Bruce Buck saying can you move training and come and meet us in the boardroom. You know that first message as well, you wake up and think ‘let’s have a flick through Instagram – I’m joking but once the club make that decision, there’s no nice way to do it.

They said can you come and meet us in the boardroom, I knew straightaway there is no nice way of doing that, there may be different ways of etiquette but at the end of the day results are the same. When I met Bruce and Marina, it was very cordial – I knew what was coming then. Not at the time but I was thankful for the period, you understand what it is – they are going to move on and there is nothing you can do about it, I’ve never been in that position before and it was a little bit surreal at the time, but it is what is.

When you take the job, you understand that call may come, unless you are winning back to back titles that’s going to happen.” Note: quotes thanks to The Mirror.

The Blues never looked back

Despite severing ties with one of the greatest players to ever suit up in Chelsea blue, the English giants could not have made a better rebound from what turned into a disappointing new era under Lampard.

The hiring of Thomas Tuchel in of itself was a masterstroke despite his separation from Paris Saint-Germain, immediately netting the club a Champions League win in just six months’ time after the German tactician got a tune out of a rather expensive band that was first assembled under Lampard.

And as you no doubt already know, things have gone from great to stellar in 2021-22 as Chelsea is currently winning a massively tight three-horse race to the Premier League crown against holders Manchester City and free-scoring Liverpool.

Frank Lampard may not have been able to add to his already magnificent legacy at Chelsea, but the club is certainly all the better for it.
