Former Southampton man controversially breaks record previously held by Lionel Messi
Tadic’s Southampton stint
It is easy to forget that Ajax star Dusan Tadic once played for Southampton.
The Serbian appeared 162 times for the Saints, before joining the Amsterdam outfit in 2018, where his career really took off.
In the three years since, Tadic has gone on to score 84 goals and provide 83 assists in 173 appearances, which is over 100 more goal contributions than he managed in England, in just 9 more appearances.
Tadic breaks record, or does he?
And, impressing in Ajax colours, Tadic has now broken a record set by Lionel Messi in 2011.
With Ajax winning 5-0 against Fortuna Sittard on Wednesday evening, Tadic overtook the Argentine’s assist record in a calender year.
Previously standing at 36, Tadic managed 37 assists in the calender year of 2021, surpassing Messi’s record, according to the official ajax account.

However, safe to say, Barcelona fans were not happy, alleging that two of those assists came in club friendly matches, and therefore did not count.

Dusan Tadic had 35 assists in official games in 2021.
Messi had 36 assists in official games in 2011.
Those two extra assists were in club friendlies, club friendly tallies are never considered in any “world records.”
