Former crime intelligence boss to spend five years in jail

Former crime intelligence boss Richard Mdluli has been sentenced to five years in prison by the High Court in Johannesburg.

He was sentenced alongside his former colleague, Mthembeni Mthunzi.

The case is connected to the assault of Oupa Ramogibe in 1998.

Ramogibe allegedly had an affair with Mdluli’s wife, Tshidi Buthelezi.

In 1998, Mthunzi and Mdluli went to a house in Vosloorus in search for the two where they assaulted Alice Manana forcing her to reveal the whereabouts of Buthelezi and Ramogibe.

Manana told the officers their whereabouts and they went to Orange Farm where Buthelezi and Ramogibe were found.

Ramogibe was assaulted by the officers

He was later murdered in 1999 and no one was arrested for his murder.

Mdluli and his co-accused, Mthembeni Mthunzi, were found guilty of kidnapping, common assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and four counts of intimidation last July.

Mdluli was, however, acquitted on the counts of intimidation four months later.

Both men, who are in their 60s, asked the court for leniency when imposing its sentence due to their poor health.

The judge announced: “Effectively you are sentenced to five years in prison”.
