Former Chelsea star reveals contact over shock January Barcelona switch

One-time Chelsea star Oscar has revealed that representatives from Spanish giants FC Barcelona have been in touch with his agent, over the possibility of making the move to the club this month.

Oscar, currently plying his trade in China with Shanghai Port, revealed the news on Friday, during an interview with TNT Sports.

When pressed directly on whether reports that Barca had been in touch over his signing were accurate, the now-30-year-old was not shy in explaining:

“Yeah, this came to my knowledge.

“Barcelona reached out to my agent to know about this possibility, they knew football in China will stop until March. So maybe, but Barca is facing a difficult time now.”

“I was told about this interest, I guess they’re still trying to figure something out. Barca has this issue about registering new signings and they’d still need to sort talks with my club.

Oscar went on to reveal that any potential Camp Nou switch would come in the form of a 6-month loan, also admitting that, if the opportunity does indeed present itself, it would be a ‘great’ step forward in his career:

“They would want for me to join until the end of the season. They’re still talking, it’s ongoing, but there’s this problem with the new signings – I guess Dani Alves has faced some.

“It’s nice to see a great club interested in you. We didn’t have any talks so far, there’s no point doing that if Barcelona can’t register new players right now. Barca is trying to sort their end out, then maybe I’ll talk to my agent so we can arrange something.

“It’d be an incredible opportunity for me, for Barcelona too. I’m in great form here, it would be great for my career.

“I suppose Barca would also appreciate it as I’m now more experienced, mature and I know they have a lot of youngsters right now. It could work out for everybody. I’d be happy if things work out, but I still have a contract. Shanghai helps me a lot so I have no complaints.”

Blues stint

The name of midfield talent Oscar will of course be well recognised by regular viewers of the Premier League over the course of the last decade.

This comes with the Brazilian, capped a none-too-shabby 48 times by his country, having lined out for Chelsea for four-and-a-half years between 2012 and 2016.

Oscar was widely hailed for his creative exploits and eye for the spectacular, with his efforts having proven key to the Blues clinching the Premier League title on a pair of occasions, as well as the Europa League in 2012/13.

The gifted Sao Paulo youth product, though, ultimately opted to depart west London for the riches of the Chinese Super League, where he has since remained on the books of heavyweights Shanghai Port.
