Former Chelsea boss emerges among frontrunners for Everton job as Benitez pressure mounts

Rafa Benitez under pressure

Everton boss Rafa Benitez is under serious pressure.

The toffees are enduring a torrid run of form, and were blitzed 4-1 by Liverpool at their own ground in midweek.

Although it looked close at half-time, with Demarai Gray reducing the scoreline to a respectable 2-1, the second-half was entirely one-sided as Jurgen Klopp’s side showed the quality that makes them amongst the favourites for the Premier League title this season.

Despite the results, owner Farhad Moshiri has given his vote of confidence.

Speaking to Jim White, Moshiri revealed that he feels that Benitez needs more time in charge at the club in order to turn things around, and that he will not be sacked.

With games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City to come in December however, this could quickly change if the results do not.

And now, an altogether surprise candidate has emerged.

Mourinho in?

As per the Mirror, it is former Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho who has emerged among the frontrunners for the job should Benitez depart the club in the current weeks.

According to the report:

Jose Mourinho has emerged as a potential target for Everton if they decide to pull the plug on Rafa Benitez’s reign.

The Portuguese only took over at Italian side Roma in July, but there is already a belief he would be open to a return to England if the right opportunity presented itself.

Mourinho is not having a great time of it with Roma at the moment, having lost 3-0 to Inter Milan in his most recent outing, to leave the side from the Italian capital languishing in 5th. 13 points off the lead and nine points outside the Champions League places.

Would Everton fans want him on Merseyside, after previous trips to London and Manchester?
