Onana open to Barcelona return

Star Ajax and Cameroon goalkeeper André Onana has pushed his boat out of drydock when it comes to his next port of call, linking himself with interest in a return to Barcelona.

SB Nation’s Reshad Rahman sourced quotes from Spanish outlet Sport after Onana spoke plainly about where he could look to continue his career after his terms with Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam come to an end at the end of the current season;

“I’m still in contact with Barça. I have a very good relationship with the club, ever since I left. Is signing for Barça still my first choice? Obviously. It’s my home and I grew up there.

After setting off on his football journey at Samuel Eto’o Academy in his native Cameroon, Onana spend five years between 2010-15 in Barcelona at the vaunted La Masia academy set-up before finishing his education in the Ajax pipeline before making his full professional debut in 2016. Since then, he’s featured 205-times for de Godenzonen across six seasons (including the current 2021-22 campaign) while capturing a pair of Eredivisie titles and the same amount of Dutch Cups (KNVB Beker).

Apart from the interest in Barcelona, Onana also mentioned both Serie A champions Inter Milan and Premier League outfit Arsenal as possible destinations that he has been linked with but distanced himself from suggesting that any decision has been reached.

Barça prepare for tough Europa League knockout stage

The aftermath of Barcelona crashing out of the Champions League during the group stage has not gotten any easier after Xavi’s men learned their Europa League fate yesterday.

Blaugrana has been drawn against Serie A outfit SSC Napoli in the first round of the knock-out stage and must now contend with a side that has proven capable of scoring a high volume of goals across recent seasons.

Napoli presents arguably the toughest opponent Barcelona could have been drawn against given the seeding system, but it was further proof that the Europa League is so much more than just a second-rate European competition with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, FC Porto, Sevilla, and Atalanta Bergamo all being included in the play-off round.
