Former Arsenal midfielder the latest to question Gunners on William Saliba: ‘Don’t see any reason…’

Ex-Arsenal star Samir Nasri has become the latest player to question why youngster William Saliba is yet to make his senior bow for the club.

OM stint

Gunners stopper Saliba is of course currently in the midst of a 3rd successive loan spell away from the Emirates.

After failing to establish himself in the first-team plans of Mikel Arteta in north London once again this past summer, the 20-year-old secured a return to his home country with Marseille for the 2021/22 campaign.

Saliba’s previous stint away from the Arsenal, with OGC Nice over the 2nd half of last season, saw the Frenchman earn rave reviews for a string of mature, dominant displays at the heart of Les Aiglons’ backline.

And the early months of his spell at the Stade Velodrome have only seen the stopper continue to turn heads.

Across starts in all but one of Marseille’s Ligue 1 outings, Saliba has continued to build on his reputation as one of the best young defenders in the game.

OM have allowed just 12 goals to this point in the French top-flight campaign, sitting in an impressive 4th-place, two points adrift of 2nd.

‘Don’t see any reason’

The young stopper’s fine form back in France, though, has done little to quell the constant chatter surrounding Arsenal’s treatment of Saliba.

Many remain of the opinion that the starlet should have been handed the opportunity to impress as part of Mikel Arteta’s first-team squad this season, with the club having been overly harsh in their treatment of a potential star in the making.

And one individual whose views evidently line up with such a train of thought is one-time Gunners star Samir Nasri.

Nasri, who lined out at the Emirates for three years from 2008 to 2011, was this week drawn on Saliba’s situation in north London, during an interview with Complete Sports.

And the 34-year-old, after lauding his fellow countryman’s abilities, revealed his opinion that there is no viable ‘reason’ for Saliba not to have been handed the chance to shine by his parent club this season:

‘He has all the qualities to play in the Premier League. He’s well built, quick and a good passer of the ball too. I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be in Arsenal’s team.’
