Former Arsenal defender Johan Djourou says Spurs have “overtaken Arsenal” in the last decade

Johan Djourou discusses Tottenham

Ahead of Tottenham kicking off their Europa Conference League group stage against French outfit Rennes, former Gunner Djourou sat down with French outlet Ouest-France to discuss his former side, and their bitter rivals.

The Swiss defender made 144 appearances for Arsenal across a nine-year stay at the club, scoring just a solitary goal but helping the Gunners stay in the top four, a far cry from where they are now.

Indeed, it is their London rivals Spurs that will be playing on Thursday nights this season, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side in action in little over two hours.

And, speaking on the subject of the north London clubs, it is safe to say that Djourou did not let club loyalties stand in the way of his true feelings on the matter, as he revealed that Tottenham have progressed past his old side, saying:

“What’s beautiful in both those clubs is that, for example, Tottenham fans have been there during complicated moments. Now, they have a stadium, interesting results and it’s a pride for them. They are missing titles still, but they’ve progressed a lot these past few years. They’ve even overtaken Arsenal in the Premier League. It’s not the same Tottenham from 10 years ago”.

Of course, there is a chance for Djourou’s comments to be put to the test in ten days time, as Arsenal play host to their north London rivals in a Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Following their differing fortunes ahead of the international break, the Gunners will be desperately hoping to get one over on their bitter rivals, whilst the Lilywhites will be looking to demonstrate that they have indeed become the stronger side in north London.
