Balogun & Arsenal

Folarin Balogun is one of the many bright young talents to make his way through Arsenal’s academy in recent years.

The centre-forward, now 20, has enjoyed solid spells with the Gunners’ under-18 and under-23 sides.

At under-18 level, the Englishman would score 38 goals and provide eight assists in 41 outings. He then stepped up to the under-23 where he would score 28 and assist eight in 53.

Balogun has since been handed his senior Arsenal debut and has now made nine appearances for them scoring two and assisting one.

However, especially this season, Balogun has struggled somewhat in Arsenal’s first-team.

And, though Alexandre Lacazette, who is out of contract in the summer, could leave to free up some space for Balogun, it appears the north Londoners will go after another striker in the near future.

It was reported that the Gunners will try to sign a forward in the winter window.

And, so far, a number of names, including Ollie Watkins, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Youssef En-Nesyri, Andreas Belotti and Eran Zahavi have all been linked.

One of these players coming in would once again likely see Balogun pushed down the striking pecking order at Arsenal. And with no European football at the Emirates currently, there are less chances for young stars to be given a runout.

And now, amidst his struggles for game time, former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has offered some advice to Balogun:

“Balogun needs to go out on loan and get some football. He needs to learn his trade.

“Under-23s football is just too easy for him at the moment. He needs to go into the trenches. That is the only way he will learn about his game.

“When you play against the defenders in the lower leagues, they have mortgages and families to look after. It’s serious. Whereas it is all hunky-dory in the Under-23s.

“I’m he will go out and get that experience next year. Then he will realise his standard.”
