FIFA World Cup 2022: JioCinema records 32 million viewers in the Argentina vs France final

JioCinema is celebrating a new record as digital viewership surpassed cable TV for the first time in a global sports season, according to the service. According to the telecommunications company, 32 million viewers tuned in to its JioCinema website and phone app, during the final game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where Argentina emerged victorious over France, in a fierce contest which ended in a penalty shootout. . Meanwhile, 110 million viewers watched the World Cup finals on digital platforms, placing India as one of the “highest digital viewership markets” for the global event.
That said, it’s worth noting that Jio didn’t offer a clear definition of how viewership numbers are calculated. During the first two days of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, several users reported issues while trying to stream matches on the JioCinema website and app. While Gadgets 360 was able to confirm that the app was working normally for the finale, it’s unclear if the numbers were based on clicks or if the page was open for an undetermined number of minutes.
According to Jio, audiences have consumed “40 billion minutes” of viewing time, on JioCinema and the Sports18 channel. The company also claims that the app “continued to be the #1 downloaded software” on iOS and Android throughout the tournament. “We promised to give consumers easy access to the world-class presentation of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and thanks to this, the tournament has become the most watched global sporting event on digital where india [Indian football team] did not participate,” Viacom18 Sports CEO Anil Jayaraj said in a prepared statement.
“It demonstrates the power of digital and the preference of viewers and fans to consume their favorite events, which will now see Paris Saint-Germain team-mates and FIFA World Cup winner Kylian Mbappé and World Cup winner FIFA World Cup and Ballon d’Or Lionel Messi join forces in the [French domestic] League 1.
In addition to free live streams of FIFA World Cup 2022 matches, the JioCinema app also included a Hype mode, which opens with interesting trivia, squad rosters, and stats of both teams playing live, with the added bonus of being able to rewind back to relive the highlights. A Multicam toggle has also been included in the JioCinema app on Android TV, allowing users to view the match from different camera angles.
