Fans take aim at VAR after bizarre call during Liverpool’s meeting with Brighton

Liverpool are currently locked in Premier League action with Graham Potter’s Brighton.

The Reds headed into the game knowing that a win would, temporarily at least, close the gap on Manchester City to three points.

Man City are not in action till Monday when they face Crystal Palace, a game they should win.

As a result, Liverpool really cannot afford to drop any points against an out-of-form Brighton that have lost their last four league games.

And, at the time of writing, Liverpool are on course to pick up a big three points.

Brighton started the tie well, but Liverpool would take the lead after 20 minutes when Luis Diaz headed in from a lovely Joel Matip ball.

VAR officials targeted

In the build-up to Diaz’s goal, the Colombian was quite clearly followed by Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Keepers obviously have the right to come out and challenge for any ball, but the Spaniard was very late in his challenge and his foot was very high.

Yet despite being looked at by VAR, Sanchez was not even shown a yellow card.

In turn, VAR has come in for some heavy criticism online, with just some of the reaction shown below:
