Everton fans rejoice: Rafael Benitez makes history as sacking confirmed

The prayers of the Everton faithful have today been answered, on the back of confirmation that the club have parted ways with head coach Rafael Benitez.

Norwich defeat the final straw

The subject of Benitez’s future on Merseyside had of course come back to the fore in a major way over the course of the last 24 hours.

This comes after the Spaniard led his side to Carrow Road, eyeing just a 2nd Premier League win of the season up against basement dwellers Norwich City.

When all was said and done, however, not only did the Blues fall short of all three points, but they couldn’t even manage one, slipping to an alarming 2-1 defeat owing to a Michael Keane own goal, followed by a rare strike on the part of Adam Idah.

Calls, in turn, quickly spread across the Everton fanbase for Benitez to be sent on his way with immediate effect.

Rafa departs

And, as alluded to above, on Sunday afternoon, such calls have been answered in kind by the board at Goodison Park.

In a series of posts across the club’s social media platforms, Everton have confirmed that they have indeed parted ways with Benitez:

Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager.

Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.

An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.

The Spaniard, brought to Merseyside just this past summer, departs his post having managed five wins from nineteen in the Premier League, a stretch which also included ten defeats.

In the process of being sacked, meanwhile, Benitez has too set an unwanted record at Goodison Park, as the tactician with the shortest reign in Everton’s storied history:
