England hit with UEFA ban following EURO 2020 final trouble

Euro 2020 final marred by thuggery

Euphoria of England reaching the final in their home country quickly turned sour as violence and ticketless fans stormed Wembley.

After dispatching Denmark 2-1 in the Semi final days earlier, the Three Lions reached their first final since 1966, with Gareth Southgate leading his side past Germany and Ukraine in the process.

However, fans without tickets stormed the ground, with around 5000 extra spectators finding their way into the fixture. Leicester Square, too, saw violence and disorder from around midday, while there was also a pitch invader and audible booing of the Italian national anthem.

UEFA hit England with ban

As a result of the disruption, a UEFA investigation has concluded that England should be hit with a two-match ban for home supporters, one of which will be suspended.

This only applies to UEFA games, namely Euro 2024 qualifiers and Nations League games, meaning that they the ban will likely not be noticed until 2022 at the very earliest given the World Cup next year.

In addition, the FA have been hit with a 100,000 euro fine “for the lack of order and discipline inside and around the stadium, for the invasion of the field of play, for throwing of objects and for the disturbances during the national anthems”.

Is it deserved, or should the punishment have been harsher?
