Elon Musk and tech leaders urge top AI labs to suspend training beyond GPT-4

Elon Musk, along with a group of AI experts and tech executives, urged top AI labs to temporarily halt development of AI systems more advanced than GPT-4, in an open letter published Tuesday.

The open letter, published by the nonprofit Future of Life Institute, has around 1,000 signatories, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque and Sapiens author Yuval Noah Hararias as well. than Musk. “AI systems with human competitive intelligence can pose serious risks to society and humanity, as shown by extensive research and recognized by top AI labs,” the letter begins.

The open letter comes weeks after the public debut of OpenAI’s GPT-4, which is the big language model that powers ChatGPT. It is also the most advanced AI system ever, which managed to stun and scare AI experts with its capabilities.

“Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth, and should be planned and managed with commensurate care and resources,” the letter states. “Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening, even though the past few months have seen AI labs locked in an uncontrollable race to develop and deploy digital minds ever more powerful than anyone – not even their creators – can reliably understand, predict or control.”

OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
