Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has just received a new trailer. Following the initial reveal at San Diego Comic-Con last year, this new trailer offers a better look at villains, tons of Easter eggs, and chaotic events that unfold as though players have rolled multiple 1s on the dice. Originally slated for a July 2021 release, the feature adaptation suffered multiple delays, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and other internal issues, before finally settling for a drop in 2023. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves hits theaters worldwide on March 31.

The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer opens aptly by displaying the stark contrast in personality between the main characters; Holga the Barbarian (Michelle Rodriguez) brutally beats up henchmen, while cowardly bard Edgin (Chris Pine) avoids getting her hands dirty by trying to cut the handcuff rope by rubbing it vigorously against the stairs. “You know what? I think there are probably steeper stairs elsewhere,” he shouts, as Holga continues to play solo with the bandit team. We are then reminded of the film’s premise, which sees Edgin leading a pack of rogue adventurers on a fantastical journey in search of an ancient relic. A mysterious magical horn that our heroes themselves have inadvertently given to the wrong person, unleashing the “greater evil than the world has ever known”.

“The Red Magicians have created an army of undead,” Xenk (Régé-Jean Page), a very serious paladin, describes the situation to our heroes, who begin to conjure up ideas to complete the mission. The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer then focuses on each of their abilities – Sophia Lillis (It: Chapter Two) is Doric the shape-shifter, adept at transforming into different animals, even allowing him to navigate through tiny crevices. Meanwhile, Judge Smith (Detective Pikachu) plays Simon the Sorcerer, who is extremely unpredictable in the way he casts spells.

We are then shown glimpses of their battle against one of Thay’s Red Wizards, Sofina (Daisy Head), who can be seen conjuring a spectral fleshy hand to get hold of Doric. As previously reported, the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves trailer is loaded with Easter eggs for fans – some of which were detailed in an IGN interview with co-directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. First, we have a chunky version of the Embershard. “Embershad in tradition is known as a glutton. And so, we really wanted to look into that idea for one of our dragons,” Daley explained. “We wanted each of our dragons to be special in their own right because people know what dragons look like.” Dark Souls players, on the other hand, should be able to recognize the Mimic Chest which, when triggered, opens wide with a set of sharp teeth.

The film seems to draw heavily on the playful nature of the eponymous tabletop role-playing game. It also stars Hugh Grant as Forge Fitzwilliam, the cunning thief, who can be seen befriending our heroes before coming up with his own agenda. The actor previously suggested the film had a “Monty Python sensibility” in terms of humor.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves releases March 31 in theaters worldwide. In India, the film will also be available in Tamil and Telugu.
