Doom creator John Romero is working on a new FPS title. The co-founder of Id Software and one of the leaders behind Wolfenstein 3D and earthquake confirmed a new project via Twitter. His personal studio, Romero Games, will support and use Unreal Engine 5 for the development of the title. It’s worth noting that Romero had no involvement with the rebooted Doom series – his most recent venture being Empire of Sin, a mafia strategy game. With this new shooter, the creator of the popular series returns to his roots.


Development of the unnamed title is currently in its early stages, and Romero posted a tweet listing several job openings for the game. Details are scarce, though the official website implies that this is new. IP address of the original Doom creator and that it will use Epic’s Unreal Engine 5. “You are welcome to our studio and our team. Romero Games has a long history of inclusivity, diversity and respect, and this is reflected in our team, our leadership, our culture and benefits, and our development partners,” it reads.

The job listings don’t reveal much except for mention of a multiplayer component and widescreen support. At this point, there is also no confirmation of platforms, launch window, or publishers. Meanwhile, Romero is working on Sigil 2, an unofficial mod that brings nine new closed corridors, shooting levels to Doom in a small standalone app.

Romero Games was established in 2015 by co-founder Romero and his wife Brenda, debuting with Gunman Taco Truck – a pixelated side-scrolling roguelike game set in a post-apocalyptic world. They then followed Sigil, a free expansion add-on for Bethesda’s 2019 re-release of the original Doom game.

While Romero Games’ offices are located in Galway, Ireland, the job posting also mentions remote and hybrid working models, tailored to employee convenience. Most of the vacancies are for leadership positions for early conceptualization, so it could be a year or two before we hear about any promising updates.
