Doctor Who Taps Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor

Ncuti Gatwa, best known for the Netflix series Sex Education, will be the new doctor in the long-running BBC series Doctor Who.

Gatwa will replace outgoing Timelord Jodie Whittaker, the BBC confirmed over the weekend, and will become the first black actor to play the iconic character.

Scottish actor Gatwa, born in Rwanda, said he was “deeply honoured, more than excited” and “a bit scared” to be on the show.

“This role and this show means so much to so many people around the world, including myself, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors has taken on this unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will do my best to do likewise,” the 29-year-old said.

Showrunner Russell T Davies said Gatwa “blew us away” when he auditioned to play the 14th incarnation of the Doctor.

“Sometimes talent comes through the door and it’s so bright and bold and bright, I just stand back and thank my lucky stars,” said Davies, who returns as Doctor Who showrunner after leaving the show. series in 2009.

Gatwa will make his Time Lord debut in 2023, and Whittaker will sign on in a special to air later this year.

Whittaker, also known for shows such as Broadchurch and Black Mirror, took over from Doctor Who in 2017 as the first female doctor.

Doctor Who is currently not available to stream in India.
