For many, it seems like being born into royalty would be a dream life. The money, the palaces, the fanciest vacations, international travel, a title that goes with it all. But for Britain’s Prince Harry, who married American actress Meghan Markle in 2018, royalty hasn’t followed those dreams. The couple now live in California with their two children, and their documentary series, Harry & Meghan, is now available on Netflix.
Here’s what we know.
What are Harry and Meghan talking about?
Netflix already houses The crown. But that fictional look at royal life is now joined by reality, as Harry and Meghan present the real-life royal family in their own words. It is set to cover the couple’s early relationship, engagement and royal wedding in 2018 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in England. But the juicy parts of the show cover the couple’s decision to retire as working royals in 2021, moving first to Canada and then to the United States.
A trailer released on December 5 shows Harry and Meghan talking about how rosy his reception into the Royal Family was – at first. Things quickly changed, with the British press and some people inside the palace apparently targeting Meghan, focusing specifically on her mixed-race background. Comparisons are being made to Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana, who died in a car crash while being chased by photographers in Paris in 1997. Meghan says she realizes the family “wasn’t going to never protect her”, and Harry said he was “terrified”. “that what happened to his mother would happen to his wife.
Where can you watch Harry & Meghan?
The couple have a deal with Netflix and hence this is the only place you can watch the show. The streaming service doesn’t offer free trials, but you can cancel your subscription at any time if you try it out and don’t think you’ll get your money’s worth. There are no cancellation fees or long-term contracts.
Or ask a friend with Netflix to invite you over for tea and TV.
When will Harry & Meghan episodes be available?
Harry & Meghan is a series of six episodes. The first three episodes arrived on December 8, and the final three a week later on December 15.
What’s wrong with Harry and Meghan?
Harry was third in line to the British throne when he was born into an already troubled marriage between Diana and Prince Charles (now King Charles III) in 1984. He is now fifth in line, behind elder brother William and the three young children of William. Barring tragedy, he will never ascend the throne. But many viewers feel they saw Harry grow up and felt sympathy for him when Diana died when he was just 12. He’s one of those well-known faces whose life doesn’t matter to Americans (or, frankly, to many Brits), but there’s enough glamor and intrigue to keep royal watchers interested. .
Netflix also promises a socially educational side to the show, not just celebrity gossip. We will see.
“With commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the relationship of royals with the press, the series does more than shed light on a couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other,” Netflix says in the description. of the show.
What will Harry and Meghan reveal?
Certainly, the racism the couple faces will be an integral part of the show. When Harry and Meghan gave their famous Oprah Winfrey interview in March 2021, Meghan told the talk show queen that palace officials were concerned about her unborn son’s skin color. There has been much speculation since about who said this and what exactly they said. It seems unlikely that Harry or Meghan will reveal that person’s name and risk severing that family bond forever, but the royals will no doubt sweat as the series comes hard on the heels of another race scandal last week. involving a palace official interviewing a black guest. at the Palace.
Much of the show will certainly deal with how the palace treated Meghan, as a biracial American divorcee marrying into a family where all these things were once shocking. Meghan said in the Oprah interview that the palace did not offer help when royal pressure pushed her to consider suicide – it will definitely come back. A line from Harry in the trailer alludes to leaked and planted stories about the two that came from inside the palace and likely made Harry and Meghan look bad in the press.
On a mellower note, the show gives you a glimpse into the royal couple’s $14.7 million Montecito mansion and a glimpse into being a multi-millionaire parent of two young children. Princess Diana fans can find out more about what it was like to be the youngest son of perhaps the most famous woman in the world.
And speaking of famous women, Harry might reveal a bit of his late grandmother’s personal side, Queen Elizabeth II
, who has always kept his private life a secret. It will be interesting for some to see if the series tackles Netflix’s other royal series, the fictional drama The Crown, or Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the Prince and Princess of Wales, aka Prince William and Kate Middleton – especially the much-discussed argument over the bridesmaid dresses Kate and Meghan allegedly had before Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
And as episodes air, the British press will almost certainly reveal what Palace courtiers think of the series. They are certain to have backlashes. The Queen’s sweet statement after Oprah interview said “some memories may vary”, and you bet we’ll hear about those different memories.
