The 14-story mill is an absolutely massive wooden structure, even by today’s standards. The ore would arrive by aerial tramway from much higher up in the surrounding mountains, then be split and sorted into the precious copper to leave by train at ground level.

The glacier, like almost all glaciers, has retreated significantly over the past 100 years. At the height of the mine, the glacier was so large that you could not see the mountains in the distance. Stand on the glacier, let yourself be seen down on the mill.

Finally, after all that, the copper ore gets here. It was packed into 140-pound bags and loaded onto railcars for shipment to the port of Cordoba, 196 miles away. From there it was sent to Tacoma by ship to be melted down. Remnants of these railway lines and their many bridges can be seen throughout the region and on the route.

While the mill was quite advanced for its time, a new method for extracting the very last copper was developed here in Kennecott, located in this building directly across from the mill.

Called ammonia leaching, it liquefied copper from limestone.

The ammonia was then boiled off, leaving fairly pure copper. This was bagged and shipped with the rest of the copper from the mine.

A photo around 1968. The mine had been closed for 30 years and completely abandoned for 16 years. Two remarkable things to note here. First, how similar it all looks now, half a century later.
Second, look at how tall the glacier was in 1968. In the 1930s, it was more than double that height.

While the mine is certainly a key attraction in the area, it’s not the only one. A few miles from Kennecott is the Root Glacier. You can hire a guide to take you to the surface, but it’s quite a hike.

In a great great loop from McCarthy south to Kennecott, we flew over Nizina Glacier, Wrangell Mountains, then back down Root and Kennicott Glaciers. It was one of the most incredible moments of my life.
