Department says no need for water restrictions yet

Department says no need for water restrictions yetDespite the Vaal River system being under pressure, the Water Affairs Department made it known that this stage does not require water restrictions yet.

The department reported that the Vaal Dam levels had been declining since April and the lack of rainfall made the situation worse.

However, the situation would not prompt the department to impose water restrictions.

Officials made this known to the media at the Vaal Dam in Deneysville on Tuesday.

Last week, restriction suggestions were raised as the Vaal River’s levels dropped below 60%.

Around this time, last year, the dam level was more than 65%.

The Water and Sanitation Departments spokesperson, Celiwe Ntuli explained that water usage will not be restricted for those using the Vaal River system.

She said “the system can drop below 60% just ordinarily like we are now.”

“It doesn’t mean that, because we are now below 60%, we need to impose restrictions. Not necessarily.”

Ntuli added that  if the need arise for more water, water could be released from the Sterkfontein reserve which is full.

She urged members of the public to use water sparingly.
