David Moyes provides concerning update on West Ham’s striker pursuit
West Ham’s need for depth
West Ham had a sensational 2020/21 campaign which saw the finish 6th and earn a spot in this season’s Europa League group stage.
With European football, though, comes a whole host more games that the Hammers need to navigate.
And, as they do have a fairly small squad that lacks a lot of quality depth, fans were no doubt expecting their side to be pretty active in the market this summer.
However, outside of loaning Alphonse Areola and potentially getting Kurt Zouma in, West Ham have not added an awful lot to their squad this summer.
One area that does need addressing before the window shuts is centre-forward.
Michail Antonio is a great option and has had a solid start to 2021/22. But he is very injury prone and it seems very unlikely that he can play every single cup and league game for West Ham this term.
Moyes’ striker update
So, West Ham obviously need a new striker brought in this summer. And they have been linked with a few, including Gaetan Laborde and Alassane Plea.
However, David Moyes’ recent update on West Ham’s striker search suggests that there is a real chance the window closes without them brining another no.9 in.
The Scotsman stated he is desperate to sign a forward, but the ones they have been offered either cost too much or they are not available:
“I’m really desperate to sign a forward but from what we can get, and what we’ve been offered – at the moment I’m not quite getting it.
“It’s either the cost is too much, or they’re not available. I hope we find someone but I certainly haven’t got any guarantees that’s for sure.”
Moyes added that there is a really good chance they do not sign a centre-forward:
“There’s a really good chance we don’t sign a centre-forward, a really good chance we don’t get one.
“That’s a fact and I’ve been saying that all along. The quality of the centre forwards required to come in. So there’s a good chance we don’t get one but we might try and find a way of getting more goals in the team from other positions like, like get Said [Benrahma] to get us goals and we’ve got [Jarrod] Bowen to those goals already get the goals.
“They’re not out-and-out number nines so we may look to see if we can do that as well from, from other areas.”
