David Moyes gives update on Michail Antonio after Jamaican passed on international duty

Clarification on fitness of Antonio provided

West Ham boss David Moyes provided a valuable update on key Hammers front-man Michail Antonio today ahead of Sunday’s away day at Goodison Park against Rafa Benítez’s Everton.

Moyes has to deal with a pair of fitness doubts around Vladimír Coufal and Ryan Fredericks for the weekend, but clarified that Antonio was not one of the potential selection headaches.

“I think he has been firing on all cylinders and I hope he’s well-rested and has got some good training in. He chose not to go with Jamaica because he felt that some of the logistics weren’t correct.” Note: quotes provided by Ben Dinnery

There will undoubtedly be a sigh of relief amongst the West Ham fanbase as their only true center-forward should be in the match day XI to try to push the club ahead of Everton in the table as the Hammers sit three-points off the Toffees but only just one behind in goal difference.

Michail Antonio has started the 2021-22 season brightly on all fronts for West Ham as the Jamaican international has become the undisputed key goalscorer for David Moyes.

The London-native has hit 5-goals in the Premier League in six outings thus far this campaign, while adding 3-assists to his goal contributions in the league. He has contributed smartly in the Hammers Europa League campaign as well, scoring once against Dinamo Zagreb in the group stage opener, and added a helper on matchday two against Rapid Vienna; both matches ended 2-0 to Moyes’ troops.

Antonio is now the clubs all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League era, and his progression – though late – has come at a key moment for the player and the club alike. He sits just one goal behind joint-leaders Jamie Vardy ad Mohamed Salah, and is currently is on pace to unexpectedly crack the 20-goal mark.
