David Benavidez Reveals What Mike Tyson Told Him: ‘He Thinks I Could Be the One to Potentially Beat Canelo’

Former world champion David Benavidez has claimed that he came across some life-changing advice when he met Mike Tyson. Aged 54, Tyson is now a boxing historian and one of the biggest veterans of the by-gone era. Hence, his appraisal seems to mean a lot to the modern-era fighters.

That said, David Benavidez and Mike Tyson recently interacted on the latter’s HotBoxin’ podcast. The former WBC super-middleweight champion, Benavidez, revealed some insights from the meeting revealing how Tyson viewed his scope at the 168 lbs division.

In a chat with, ‘El Bandera Roja Red Flag’ said, “I have seen him a couple of times, but I never sat down and talked to him, and honestly, I never thought he follows me like that. This is me thinking you know but you know we sat down, he [Mike Tyson] told me that he like the way I fight and he thinks I could be the one to potentially beat Canelo which really meant a lot to me,” said David Benavidez.

Akin to Mike Tyson, several analysts and fans have tagged Benavidez as the perfect antidote to Canelo Alvarez’s dominance. 24-0 as a pro, Benavidez has already tasted gold and has scored 21 KOs on his rise to stardom. So, he is rightly a top-tier super middleweight boxer at this stage. However, the P4P king Canelo Alvarez looks indomitable, as he is comfortably picking wins against undefeated champions.

David Benavidez vs Canelo Alvarez- Will it happen soon?

After successfully grabbing the WBC, WBA, and Ring titles against Callum Smith, Alvarez has also added Billy Joe Saunders’s WBO strap to his name in May. Meanwhile, as Alvarez beat Avni Yildirim in February to defend his WBC, WBA, and Ring belts, he is now one belt short of becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Hence, Alvarez has sighted a fight against IBF titlist Caleb Plant next. Considering this, Benavidez may not get his chance anytime soon. However, the former champion’s dominance and sheer record validate him for a title shot. Thus, he can look forward to the ‘Canelo’ show after Alvarez gets done with ‘Sweethands’. Till then, Benavidez can accept another showdown to remain active in the mix.
