Dani Alves makes Barcelona return

Iconic Brazilian right-back Dani Alves officially completed his return to Barcelona today after the Catalan giants confirmed the free signing, the first under new boss and Alves’ former clubmate Xavi.

Alves was one of the star men – along with Xavi –  in a stint at Barcelona that lasted eight seasons, saw him net 21-goals and a remarkable 101-assists across a combined 391-appearances in all competitions, and help the club bag twenty-three major honors during his spell at the Camp Nou which included six La Liga titles and three Champions League wins in a spell where he was unanimously considered to be the best in his position in the world.

The 119-times capped Brazilian international, who recently featured for Seleção in a substitute appearance during their 2-0 win against Peru in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying back in September, adds badly needed depth in the right-sided full-back position for Xavi given the long-term injury to Moussa Wagué and recent fitness concerns surrounding American international Sergiño Dest.

But Barcelona supporters will have to wait till January to officially welcome the fan-favorite back to the club after the announcement stated that he will be unable to feature until the new year despite beginning training immediately.

Alves featured for Brazilian outfit São Paulo earlier this season before being released on a free, and that fact will keep him out of contention for selection until January.

First of many signings wanted by Xavi

The return of Dani Alves will be a nice addition to the Barcelona squad under new boss Xavi, but more business is wanted by the legendary former Blaugrana midfielder as he looks to rapidly improve the quality on offer in the first-team.

Xavi has already made clear his desire to add quality on the flanks at the Camp Nou and has targeted one of Manchester City’s Ferran Torres or RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo for potential business moving forward.

The need for a center forward also looms with concerns over the career of Sergio Agüero continuing to swirl, with Barcelona linked to the likes of Edinson Cavani and Raheem Sterling for January business.

Dani Alves may be the first in the door under the new headmaster, but he certainly won’t be the only one.
