after the club snatched him up on a free transfer after his spell with São Paulo came to an end earlier this season.

But regardless of what is in store for the 38-year-old Brazilian veteran as he begins his second stint in Catalunya, there is a key factor that stands out about his return to his old stomping grounds; his desire to work with United States international starlet Sergiño Dest.

During a Q&A in front of fans, Alves made mention of his initial interactions with Dest and what he hopes to achieve during his Barcelona reunion;

“I’ve been talking with Dest. I will try to help him the most. He is a great player. We are going to try to make him understand how things are done at Barça so that he adapts to the club.” Note: quote via Total Barça.

Despite competing for minutes in the same position, the 21-year-old Dest would have a mountain of knowledge that he could gain access to in working alongside Alves who spend eight immensely successful seasons at Barcelona.

Dest has been a key feature for the club this season under Ronald Koeman before the Dutchman’s sacking, starting ten of a possible eleven La Liga fixtures while also featuring twice in the Champions League. It is unclear if Alves will leapfrog the young American, but his new connection to Alves is undoubtedly invaluable.

Positive return for Brazilian icon

“In recent years they [Barcelona] have loaded negative things on to their shoulders. It’s time to change and you need to be positive. That’s my mission here.

The last time I had this microphone, I said the dream wouldn’t end there. That’s why I’m here again.”

Returning fan-favorite Dani Alves could hardly hold in his excitement about returning to the club that truly helped him become elevated to arguably the best right-back of his generation.

Dani Alves reveals which Barcelona star he plans to help the most

But it has become clear that he is back at the Camp Nou for reasons far beyond nostalgia.

“I might have a bit less hair but some things never change: the spirit, the fight, the soul. And when Xavi called and said they could do with my help, I didn’t want to hear anything else.”

There is a real desire for the Brazilian icon to make a difference in Barcelona and help the club out of the doldrums in which they currently reside.

Ninth in La Liga, nine points off table-topping Real Sociedad, struggling in Champions League, and amidst an ongoing financial crisis; to say that Barcelona is in need of assistance would be a bit of an understatement.

And though Dani Alves does not have the keys to financial stability, his experience and desire to make a difference on the pitch may certainly become a key factor under the new Xavi regime at the Camp Nou that countless Blaugrana faithful will be hoping is the answer.
