Cristiano Ronaldo makes history to break Lionel Messi’s Instagram record
A photo posted by Cristiano Ronaldo on Instagram this week has culminated in the Manchester United star surpassing long-time rival Lionel Messi in the history books of the social media platform.
Portuguese icon Ronaldo has of course endured an altogether trying couple of weeks when it comes to matters on the pitch.
This comes amid a dismal spell of form on the part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Man United.
A stretch of just one point secured from an available twelve has seen the Red Devils slip well off the pace of the Premier League title race, with a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of arch rivals Liverpool last time out having resulted in tensions reaching boiling point.
Ronaldo, for his part, was one to have allowed his emotions to get the better of him during the Old Trafford showdown, petulantly kicking out at the grounded Curtis Jones amid a first-half rout:

As such, with United having also been ousted from the Carabao Cup, and not exactly setting the world alight in Europe, it is safe to say that Ronaldo’s 2nd stint in Manchester is not exactly off to the best start…
In turn, ahead of a testing stretch of fixtures which will see the Reds take on Tottenham, Atalanta and Man City over the coming week, it is safe to say that CR7 could have done with some positive news this week.
And precisely that was forthcoming on Thursday.
Taking to Instagram, the Portuguese international announced yesterday morning that partner Georgina Rodriguez is pregnant with twins:

And now, a little over 24 hours later, Ronaldo has taken his place in the platform’s history books.
As revealed by ESPN, on Friday, CR7 overtook long-time on-pitch rival Lionel Messi as the athlete with the most liked IG picture of all time.
PSG superstar Messi had boasted the previous record with 22 million likes on his post-Copa America triumph photo, but Ronaldo has since smashed this mark, with the eye-watering figures only continuing to climb:
