Conor Gallagher’s defiant comments show why he could be Chelsea’s next Frank Lampard

Conor Gallagher’s defiant comments show why he could be Chelsea’s next Frank Lampard

Manchester City 0-Crystal Palace 2

Crystal Palace would take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon.

In truth, though Palace have proven a hard side to beat under Patrick Viera, nobody was really expecting them to pick up a win against the current Premier League champions.

Yet, when all was said and done in Manchester, this is exactly what the Eagles managed.

Wilfried Zaha would fire the visitors into the lead after just six minutes.

Man City would then go down to 10 men shortly before the break when Aymeric Laporte was sent off.

Then, to cap of an excellent afternoon’s work, Conor Gallagher made it 2-0 to Palace after 88 minutes.

Palace had countered but were unable to find a clear opening until Gallagher made a marauding run into the box from deep:

Gallagher shows how he can be Chelsea’s new Lampard

With Gallagher a central midfielder and his parent club Chelsea, it is easy to see why some may compare him to Frank Lampard.

But his goal against Man City was a textbook Lampard effort, bursting into the box from a deep midfield role to catch the defence off guard and score.

And, this type of goal is clearly one Gallagher is able to score naturally as, speaking after City, the Englishman actually revealed that he defied his manager’s instructions, instead opting to burst into the box to score and kill the game off:

“I should not have even been in the box. The boss told me to sit in, but I just had a feeling I could get a chance, and thankfully I was able to finish it.

“When you come to Manchester City you naturally defend more and work a little bit harder. We were brilliant defensively.”

Of course, with his side only 1-0 up this could have easily backfired on him, but it does show that Gallagher clearly has the instincts to be a similar player to Frank Lampard for Chelsea.
