Concern around Barcelona starlet Gavi in wake of hospital visit after loss to Real Betis

Gavi heads to hospital after first-half head injury

The injury situation at Barcelona could be set to worsen today after Spanish international starlet Gavi was subbed-off against Real Betis at the Camp Nou earlier.

Gavi was subsequently taken to hospital after the Barça midfielder became dazed after his removal, and the club followed protocols in accordance with potential concussion symptoms according to the club’s official Twitter account.

The La Masia graduate had to come off after just 36-minutes when he was replaced by Riqui Puig during the Camp Nou clash after he was trusted by new boss Xavi in a midfield trio along with veteran holding midfielder Sergio Busquets and fellow academy product Nico González.

Should Gavi now miss any time away from first-team duties, he would join Sergio Agüero, Martin Braithwaite, Ansu Fati, Sergi Roberto, and Moussa Wagué in a lengthy list of walking wounded in Catalunya.

Barcelona suffer set-back against high-flying Betis

The decent start to life under returning club icon Xavi was halted earlier today when high-flying Real Betis continued to boast their top-four credentials in a credible 1-0 win against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

Xavi began his managerial career in Spanish domestic football with back-to-back wins against Espanyol in the Catalan derby and then a comfortable 3-1 win on the road against Unai Emery’s Villarreal as the club hoped to get back in the hunt for the Champions League places under the legendary former midfielder.

But the loss today sees the Blaugrana remain outfit the upper echelon of the table, six points back for fourth-sitting Atlético Madrid who has a match in hand over Xavi’s men.

There is still plenty of time for Barcelona to get on track and make a mid-season push on the domestic front, but the fairy-tale return of an era-defining presence at the club was never going to last forever.
