Coach Simeone extends Atletico Madrid deal until 2024
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has extended his contract until 2024, the La Liga champions announced Thursday.
The Argentinian, who won the domestic double in 1996 with the club during a five-year spell as a player and arrived at Atletico as coach in 2011, has signed through until June 30, 2024.
A statement on the club’s website confirming the extension reads, “Diego Pablo Simeone has renewed as Atlético de Madrid coach until June 30, 2024. Our coach, together with his coaching staff, signed their new contract at Wanda Metropolitano, which expands their ties with our entity.
“This gives continuity to a project that began with the arrival of the Argentine coach in 2011 and that has led to one of the most successful times of our club, in which we have won eight titles. With them, Simeone has become our most successful coach, where he is also the coach with the most victories (316).”
During Simeone’s tenure as coach, Atletico have won eight titles, including two La Liga crowns (2014, 2021) and two Europa Leagues (2012, 2018), while the club has also lost two Champions League finals against Real Madrid (2014, 2016) in his charge.
