Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger responds to ‘legend’ title following Champions League triumph & goal-saving tackle

Chelsea are champions of Europe

The 2021 Champions League final was contested by two English sides.

Manchester City headed into the clash looking to win the trophy for the first time in their history and wrap up a historic treble following wins in the League Cup and Premier League earlier in the campaign.

Chelsea, meanwhile, were aiming to secure the trophy for a second time after previously winning it in 2012.

The Blues saw off German powerhouse Bayern Munich after extra time on that occasion, but this year’s showpiece was wrapped up inside 90 minutes.

Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game after being slipped in by Mason Mount.

Rudiger on being a Chelsea legend

Mount and Havertz’s Chelsea legacy has now been cemented following their involvement in that goal.

But another star whose heroics on that night have also been highlighted is Antonio Rudiger.

Rudiger had a superb game overall, but his big moment came shortly before the half-hour mark, when he made a tackle that did look to have prevented an almost certain goal from Phil Foden:

Now, after playing a key role in Chelsea winning their second Champions League, Rudiger has been drawn on his status as a Chelsea legend.

The German, though, was quick to dismiss this, whilst also highlighting the other players who played a key role in the CL win back in May:

“It was good, but ‘legend’, I wouldn’t say that. We did it as a team, as a group, and a ‘legend’ is for other people to decide. But for me it is just that we won the Champions League together as a group and it was good.

“It was not only that challenge by me, it was Azpi’s challenge, it was also Reece’s challenge, Christensen’s challenge and Kai’s goal, Mason’s assist. It was a good team effort.”
