Chelsea-linked Kounde tipped to seek out Man United switch

Word stemming from the Spanish media on Monday suggests that long-time Chelsea target Jules Kounde is keen on a move to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Sevilla star eyed

The summer transfer window of course saw French stopper Kounde hotly tipped for a move to West London.

Despite the embarrassment of riches at his disposal, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is understood to have identified Kounde, long highly regarded across the continent, as the missing piece from his Blues backline.

A lengthy saga, in turn, unfolded, as the respective boards at Chelsea and Sevilla went back and forth regarding the 22-year-old’s valuation.

In the end, however, those in a position of power at the latter stood firm.

Monchi and co. are said to have demanded that Kounde’s release clause – worth a sum in the region of €75 – 80 million, be coughed up, or a sale would not be forthcoming.

And Chelsea, as a result, were left with little choice but to abandon their efforts to lure the Frenchman to the English capital.

Old Trafford switch?

The weeks since, however, have seen speculation continue to swirl that the Blues could yet reignite their pursuit upon the opening of the January transfer window.

This comes with Tuchel and co. evidently of the opinion that Kounde would represent a sound long-term replacement for the likes of aging duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva.

But, as outlined above, if the latest word stemming from the European media over the last 24 hours is anything to go by, then Chelsea could yet miss out on the French international once more.

As per a report from Spanish outlet El Nacional (as cited by the Mirror), both Real Madrid and Manchester United have joined the race for Kounde’s services.

With the player himself concerned about a potential lack of game-time with the former, though, he is understood to have requested that his agent prioritise the interest of United.

The Red Devils, for their part, remain ‘crazy’ about Kounde’s potential addition, despite the recent arrival of Raphael Varane at Old Trafford.

This comes amid the assumption that the out-of-favour Eric Bailly’s days on the red half of Manchester are numbered.
