Chelsea injuries continue to mount as crisis laid bare

Chelsea injuries continue to mount as crisis laid bare

Chelsea fail to win group

A last-minute equaliser from Zenit Saint Petersburg prevented Chelsea from topping their Champions League group, and dropped them into a potentially more difficult round of 16 tie.

A poor performance from the Blues was almost papered over by Timo Werner, who handed Chelsea a 3-2 advantage with 10 minutes to play with his second of the night.

Zenit, however, refused to lie down, and hit back in stoppage time.

The result means that Chelsea can draw one of the following teams in the knockout rounds:

  • Bayern Munich
  • Real Madrid
  • Ajax
  • Lille

However, injuries are becoming a problem.

Midfield woes mount

And, should Thomas Tuchel’s latest press conference be anything to go by, they could be in some serious trouble.

“Unfortunately, for many weeks, we are without N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, and now without Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek was out after the warm-up.”

Mateo Kovacic, although match fit, has tested positive for COVID-19, meaning that he will likely miss the next two games for Tuchel. Meanwhile, there has been no timescale put on the return of N’Golo Kante or Jorginho.

This means that, heading into their clash with Leeds United, Chelsea could be left with just Saul Niguez as their senior midfield option, with the Spaniard having only lasted 45 minutes on each of his two Premier League starts so far this season since joining on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, both Billy Gilmour and Conor Gallagher continue to excel away from the club, raising a series of question marks. Tuchel could deploy Reece James in central midfield, as he did against Zenit, but he would then lose the attacking verve that James offers them from right-back, something that Cesar Azpilicueta, despite his ability, cannot replicate.

Tuchel has a huge problem to solve as he looks to keep pace with the title challengers in the Premier League.
