Chelsea fear major Premier League rival set to pip them to key defensive transfer target

Chelsea fear major Premier League rival set to pip them to key defensive transfer target

Chelsea’s strong defence undermined by uncertainty

Thomas Tuchel’s side currently sit atop the Premier League table, three points clear of West Ham and Manchester City after 11 games.

Their success has mainly been built upon the strength of their defence, which has seen the Blues concede just four times in the Premier League, with 2 of those coming against fellow challengers Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, there is concern over the future of their backline. Four of their currently contracted defenders are all out of contract in the summer. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta all have just 8 months left in west London as it stands.

For this reason, it is perhaps unsurprising that Chelsea pushed so hard for Jules Kounde, the French defender from Sevilla, in the summer, although they could eventually not agree a deal.

Fears Manchester United may swoop in

Now, one side that desperately needs a defender is Manchester United. The Red Devils have seen both Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire sidelined for periods of the season, and with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reverting to a back three in recent weeks, they will need cover in those positions.

As such, Spanish outlet AS report that there is a fear in Seville that Solskjaer’s side may make a move for the centre-back, with Kounde’s 80 million euro release clause seemingly within their grasp.

Would he help Manchester United return to where they need to be, and how much of a loss could he prove should he shun Chelsea?
