Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso speaks out on future

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has been speaking about his future in a recent interview.

Alonso joined Chelsea in 2016, departing Fiorentina for a fee of around £20m.

The 31-year-old has since played 200 games for the Blues, scoring 26 and assisting 21 along the way.

Now though, given his age and the fact he has less than 18 months left on his current contract, Alonso’s future is being called into question.

And when asked whether he would play in Spain before retiring, Alonso said: “I would love to play in La Liga, all my life I have wanted to play and be here in Spain, but the circumstances have been different and not everything has depended on me.

“At the moment I am focused on this season and what has to be, will be.”

Then, when asked whether he would consider Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid or Barcelona, Alonso said: “Yes, yes, I have family ties on all sides… Chelsea right now. I have a contract for this and one more season.”

Alonso struggling for minutes

Talk of Alonso’s future comes amid the Spaniard once again losing his place as Chelsea’s main left-back.

Following the injury to Ben Chilwell, Thomas Tuchel opted to replace the Englishman with Alonso.

However, after a poor run of form that saw Chelsea’s title charge go up in smoke, Alonso is now playing back-up to Malang Sarr, who is starting at left-back despite being a centre-back.

So, given Tuchel is not playing Alonso even though he is Chelsea’s only fit, natural left-back, perhaps it would make sense for him to be sold in the summer to ensure the west Londoners recoup some form of fee.
