Chelsea continue to track Sevilla’s Jules Koundé for potential summer move

Premier League title challengers Chelsea are linked with resumed interest in Sevilla and French international center-back Jules Koundé according to fresh reports in Spain.

AS reported earlier today that the Blues have not forgotten about the 23-year-old Paris-native and claim that Chelsea is eyeing up the potential of agreeing a deal for a summer move well in advance of the transfer window in order to ward off interest from others while controlling the financial narrative of any deal that may be struck.

The report also states that should Chelsea aim for a summer deal, the price made to be paid to secure the Frenchman would be significantly cheaper; somewhere in the region of €50million. That is substantially lower than the price the Stamford Bridge outfit would have to pay to prize him away from the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán this month, which would constitute paying his €80million release clause in full.

Chelsea preparing for a potential defensive exodus

The renewed interest in Jules Koundé could well be a response by Chelsea given the growing concern that a defensive exodus from Stamford Bridge could still be on the cards after Spanish giants Barcelona have been linked with recent interest in both club captain César Azpilicueta as well as key center-back and Danish international Andreas Christensen.

Both players have yet to agree on fresh terms with Chelsea with the pair out of contract come the summer and any club being free to start discussions surrounding a potential free transfer once the summer window opens.

Should Christensen especially decide to part ways with the Premier League giants, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would be down to just Trevoh Chalobah, and Malang Sarr as potentially the only guaranteed reliable options next season. Thiago Silva agreed to an extension recently but will turn 38 in the early weeks of the 2022-23 season, while there is no telling if Antonio Rüdiger will remain in west London or if he will move on amid interest from some of Europe’s elite including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Sealing a deal for Jules Koundé would go a long way in securing the heart of the defense for Chelsea as they look to keep pace with Manchester City and Liverpool as the headline clubs in the top flight of English football.
