Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel speaks out on Cesar Azpilicueta’s future
Cezar Azpilicueta’s Chelsea stint
Chelsea would sign Cezar Azpilicueta from Marseille in 2012. The Blues are believed to have paid a reported £7.92m for the defender.
That transfer has since proven to be quite a bargain for the Blues. Azpilicueta has now become a staple of Chelsea’s side, featuring on 454 occasions at right-back, centre-back and right-wing-back.
The Spaniard has scored 14, assisted 56 and is now the Londoner’s captain at 32 years of age.
Azpilicueta has also played key roles in two Premier League triumphs, an FA Cup win, League Cup win and, most recently, Chelsea’s second-ever Champions League win.
Tuchel on Azpilicueta’s future
However, the veteran defender’s future is currently up in the air at Stamford Bridge.
This comes with Azpilicueta out of contract at the end of June 2022.
This currently means that the Chelsea man can sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club to then join said club on a free in the summer.
And it has been claimed that Azpilicueta had agreed a deal with FC Barcelona in principle, though no official confirmation was forthcoming on that.
The player himself had this to say about his contract situation earlier in January:
“I feel I have the trust and confidence of the club. Eventually the moment will come, but I am fully focused on hopefully getting as many trophies as we can and then we will see. I’m really committed – you know”

Now, Thomas Tuchel has been quizzed on the Spaniard’s future, but seemed pretty calm about the situation:
“[Azpi] is very calm. He has everything in his own hands. I see no signs we should be worried about it.”
