Chelsea boost as key defender ‘will extend contract’ at Stamford Bridge

Word stemming from the European media on Sunday evening suggests that Thiago Silva has come to the decision to extend his terms with Premier League giants Chelsea.

Blues’ concern

The situation at the heart of the club’s backline has of course proven a major concern for Chelsea of late.

This comes with no fewer than four of the club’s defenders, as things stand, poised to depart Stamford Bridge upon the expiration of their respective contracts next summer.

The players in question? Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and the aforementioned Thiago Silva.

Losing one, or potentially several of this quartet would of course mark a hammer blow for Thomas Tuchel and co., who, just months ago, confirmed their tag as the continent’s finest courtesy of a triumph over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Champions League final.

Staying put

As alluded to above, though, if the latest word doing the rounds in the media late on Sunday evening is anything to go by, then those in a position of power in west London can rest easy in the knowledge that at least one core member of the club’s backline will be staying put next season.

The player in question? Thiago Silva.

As per a report from Angelo Mangiante of Sky Italia, Brazilian international Silva ‘will extend his contract’ imminently.

The former AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain standout, despite being set to turn 38 next September, is expected to put pen-to-paper on a fresh 12-month deal through 2023:
