Carli Lloyd to Become the Oldest USWNT Player Ever Sent to the Olympics

Carli Lloyd holds the standard of her country high as she heads into her 4th Olympics tournament this year. Tokyo calls the USWNT to more glory as the World Cup winners lace up their boots once more at another shot for the gold medal.

A hardened veteran, Lloyd has been on the team longer than any of her other teammates and at 39 years of age, she is the oldest player on the Women’s soccer team to be sent to the Olympics. If this is a final run at it, nothing but success awaits her in Tokyo along with the team.

The USWNT has emerged into the spotlight as the best, conquering every team in its path. The 2019 world cup win was nothing short of a dominant statement, and we may see the same spirit next month in Japan.

Criticized in the early stages of her career for not filling the duties of her position well, Carli Lloyd had aged like fine wine and is now the best midfielder if not player in the women’s soccer universe. Her contributions in decisiveness generally shape the outcome of the game.

While many great players fizzle out to the nerves in crucial games, Lloyd is known to step forth and be that bug game player, scoring goals whenever her team absolutely needs it and winning the game. At Tokyo, she aims to do the very same and lead her team to Olympic victory shortly after a world cup one.

“It’s a tough challenge because you focus all your attention on [the World Cup] and then it’s like you have to then get going again and try to go back up that mountain again,” she said, speaking to NPR.

“So it’s incredibly challenging. If we do it this time around, I don’t know if there’ll be an asterisk because we kind of had a buffer year [because of the postponed Games]. But, you know, we’re going there to win it.”

At the cusp of another campaign, Carli Lloyd is backed by some of the best players in the world. Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Tobin Heath, and Rose Lavelle are the ones to keep an eye out for in the running.

The USWNT aims to become only the fourth team in history to win Olympic gold after a world cup success. They failed to do so in 2016 and will make no mistake as they step into Tokyo.
